Frequently asked questions
How do I switch from Square to Nickel?
Sign up for Nickel and connect your QuickBooks account. If you were using Square for invoicing, you can recreate your invoices in Nickel (or let QuickBooks sync them over) and start sending Nickel payment links. Most businesses are live within a day. Square doesn't have a direct data export to Nickel, but QuickBooks bridges the two.
How long does it take to be fully live after switching?
Most businesses send their first Nickel invoice on day 1. QuickBooks integration takes about 5 minutes. If you're setting up AP (vendor payments), your vendors need to fill out their onboarding links, which usually takes a day or two. You don't have to wait for everything to be fully onboarded before you start collecting payments.
Does Nickel offer the same payment types as Square?
Mostly. Nickel covers ACH (free), credit and debit cards (2.9%), Apple Pay and Google Pay (no extra fee), and mailed checks ($2). For paying vendors, Nickel also supports international wires ($25). Square's core strength is in-person card processing with physical terminals. Nickel doesn't do in-person POS. If your payments are invoice-based and B2B, Nickel is built specifically for that.
Does Nickel require a merchant account?
No, Nickel doesn't require a separate merchant account. You sign up, verify your business, and start processing payments. There's no third-party gateway to set up and no underwriting delay.
My processor put a hold on a large payment once. Will Nickel do the same?
We can't guarantee that Nickel will never hold a suspicious payment, but because our infrastructure is built for small businesses processing large payments, holds are far less likely here. If one ever happens, our support team is highly responsive and will contact you directly.
