What Causes ACH Return Code R51?

The R51 ACH return code means "Item Related to RCK Entry is Ineligible or RCK Entry is Improper" and indicates that a Represented Check Entry (RCK) cannot be processed because either the original paper check doesn't meet the eligibility requirements for electronic re-presentment, or the RCK entry itself was improperly created or submitted. RCK entries are used when a paper check has been returned due to insufficient funds and the merchant wants to electronically re-present that check for payment.

For a check to be eligible for RCK re-presentment, it must meet specific criteria: it must be a consumer check (not business or government), returned specifically for insufficient funds or uncollected funds, contain a pre-printed serial number, be under $2,500, be less than 180 days old, and be drawn on a participating financial institution. Additionally, proper notice must be provided to the customer, signatures must be authentic, and the check cannot be altered. When any of these requirements are not met, the receiving bank returns the transaction with an R51 code.

Can You Retry R51 Payments?

You cannot retry R51 payments using the same RCK method, as the return indicates fundamental ineligibility or improper submission that cannot be corrected. Instead, you must pursue payment through alternative methods such as requesting a new payment authorization for a standard ACH debit, asking for a replacement check, or accepting payment via credit card or other electronic payment methods that don't involve check re-presentment.

  • Identify Specific Issue
    Determine whether the problem is check ineligibility, improper notice, signature issues, alterations, or incorrect amounts.
  • Pursue Alternative Payment Methods
    Request a new payment via standard ACH authorization, credit card, wire transfer, or new physical check rather than attempting another RCK.

An R51 return on vendor payments indicates you attempted to use RCK to re-present a bounced check from a vendor, but the original check didn't meet eligibility requirements or the RCK entry was improperly submitted. This requires switching to alternative collection methods.
